Fibre Glass

Fibre glass
At this stage of the Brodie hat making process, I have the vacuum formed mould. The next stage is to fibre glass the inside.

HEALTH AND SAFETY – APRON, SAFETY GLASSES, MASK, GLOVES

Firstly to make sure the end result is easy to get out of the mould prep the mould with mirror glaze wax and spray mould wax.
Mix up the resin mixture with black metal powder and paint the inside of the mould.

Another mixture of lay-up resin is then needed, mixed with black pigment, which is then painted on top of the first resin layer once dried. Tear up sheets of both matt and tissue fibre glass into squares, lay on top of wet resin layer, and push down with the same mixture and a paintbrush, do this twice for matt then tissue fibre glass, until all is covered with lay-up resin.

The tricky bit is to get the fibre glass helmet out of the mould. But once it is it needs to be trimmed down and filed for a smooth edge.

The whole surface needs to be sanded, and it appears to be coming together now, the next stage is to paint it.
